The can-do girl from Hatteland country

If versatile companies need versatile people, this cheerful Haugesund native is the perfect fit for Hatteland Technology.

[Aksdal, May 2024]

Gry Amalie Rosberg is one of those people who keeps acquiring skills. Not because she has to, but because she wants to. And that mindset has a way of carving out new paths for her.

– My first station was Chassis. After a while there I realized I wanted to try my hand at all the other disciplines. So I told Else, the manager, I want to learn it all, she says and lights up.

And that is how she suddenly found herself at the production line, or “linja” as the staff at Aksdal refers to it. There, she assembles Hatteland® monitors with pinpoint precision.

Each unit consists of hundreds of tiny parts that have to be installed in sequential order, by hand, with no room for error. And with demand shooting through the roof, the production line is constantly on the clock. Does it stress her out?

– No, not really. I’m organized by nature, plus we receive lots of training on smart manufacturing practices,
she says. – The entire production line is designed for efficiency.

– I told Else, the manager, I want to learn it all.

Individual skills matter too, and Gry Amalie has a lot going for her. During high school she majored in TIP (roughly translates to “Technics and Industrial Production”), before starting her career as an Auto Paint Technician. It was a role she enjoyed, but she developed an intolerance to solvents and was forced to pivot.

One day, she learned Hatteland Technology was looking for people. She jumped on the opportunity and soon found herself amidst rows upon rows of industrial IT hardware.

Thanks to her technical background, it didn’t take long before she knew how to make herself useful. But there’s another side to Gry Amalie that might also explain why she thrives on the assembly line. One of her great passions in life – photography – should prime her for an essential ability in IT manufacturing: attention to detail.

A trained eye

– I haven’t thought about it like that, but that might be true, she begins.

She explains how she got into photography in the first place, when she celebrated her confirmation and used some of the money she was gifted to buy herself a proper camera.

– I immediately fell in love with photography. Since then, I’ve done a bit of paid work for friends and family, but I mostly photograph for me. I bring my camera when I’m out and about – my favorite thing is to do impromptu photoshoots of beautiful objects or spots I stumble upon.

No disadvantage being based in Haugesund, then; the area is full of picturesque lakes and ridges. Even when you’re at the company headquarters, in the middle of an industrial area, unblemished nature is only a few minutes’ walk away. Not the surroundings one would instinctively associate with industrial IT manufacturing.

We invite Gry Amalie for a hike, to learn more about her home turf. She takes us down to Aksdalsvatnet (the Aksdal lake), a popular destination for recreation.

– Isn’t this nice? she says and points her camera towards a wildflower.

Familiar territory: Gry Amalie and her trusted camera, on the shore of Aksdalsvatnet.

Gry Amalie’s summer-only car

Though flowers and other natural objects seem to be recurring themes in her portfolio, that’s not all Gry Amalie takes an interest in. It doesn’t take much interrogation before we realize she's a fool for cars.

– My first car was a proper rånebil* . It was a radiant blue VW Golf that couldn’t be driven in winter due to how low it rode, she says and laughs.

Those days are long gone, however. With two young kids, a partner, and the commitments that come with family life, she has opted for the more sensible choice: a station wagon.

– It was a radiant blue VW Golf that couldn’t be driven in winter (...)

It may not award her the street cred she once enjoyed, but on the other hand it works all year round. And that’s not nothing; when we ask her what her dream ride is nowadays, it’s clear that the more mature Gry Amalie has developed an appreciation for functionality and reliability:

– I would love to own a Mercedes Geländewagen.

Blue, and strictly for summer use: Gry Amalie’s first car.

The best colleagues

Cars and cameras aside, we’re curious to learn more about her role in the workplace, and how she finds life at Hatteland Technology now that she has been an employee for one and a half years. Back at the headquarters, we invite Gry Amalie to sit down for a chat. She grabs a water and begins describing how much she enjoys her workplace, and her co-workers in particular.

– I adore them! We have the best time, both on and off work. I do believe the culture here is a little bit special
, she says.

We wonder how tasks are organized between them, and she explains how she and her fellow assemblers rotate between stations for variety and to reduce vulnerability in case of sickness.

– We have the best time, both on and off work.
I do believe the culture here is a little bit special.

– It’s great because you get to try lots of different things. But it also means you need plenty of training from more experienced colleagues. Since day one I’ve felt welcome, everyone’s been eager to help.

Better together: Gry Amalie and a few of her cherished colleagues.

Gry Amalie seems to have everything she needs within an arm’s length: Loved ones, a nice home, a job she thrives in. We ask her if that feels like an accurate summation.

– Definitely. I grew up in this area, and though I sometimes wonder what life would be like in a major city somewhere, this is where my heart is.
